I Don’t Like Ike
Published September 17th, 2008 in It's Really Just All About Me....So, I didn’t move to Texas. But it didn’t make much difference.
Way up here in Ohio, we got hit by the last gasp of Hurricane Ike. Starting in the afternoon on Sunday, the winds went absolutely bonks. We had 70 to 90 mile per hour winds whipping through the city. And by 8 o’clock, it was all over.
We were left in the wake with trees blown over and power out across most of Columbus.
Our townhouse is located at the very back of the complex. Along the back is a row of parking spaces, a fence, and a line of trees on the other side. Winds were blasting and bending the trees so bad that we all moved our cars away. It’s a good thing we did…

A tree came toppling down at the end of our street. Luckily no rains followed. It sprinkled for a while but nothing much to talk about. Rain on top of the wind storm would have been an great big mess.
We had to dig out some candles to light our way. I picked up a few bags of ice to stick in the freezer and fridge to try to save our food. And the worse part? No power meant I couldn’t watch the Cleveland Browns play the Steelers!
Gasp! The horror!

I went out later in the evening, going door to door to see if anyone had any beer that was going to become too warm and spoiled that I could help them “dispose of”. I noticed lights on in one apartment. It turned out one of my new friends in the complex had power. We couldn’t figure out why. Everyone else in the whole apartment complex was out. But for some reason, his townhouse got their electricity from the street behind us.
So I pulled up a chair, along with 12 other people, in the garage and we got to watch the game.
Power came back on late Monday night. Just in time for the the Eagles and Cowboys game. And I was finally able to check my fantasy football stats. I’m in a league with a few daddy and mommy bloggers, like Whit at Honea Express, Pierre over at MetroDad, Tony at Cheeky’s Hideaway, and Sarah of Sarah and the Good Squad. Not only did I win (again) but I had the highest score of the week…
Life is good. But I still hate hurricanes.

I’m glad you got power so quickly. Aunt2Amara in Powell did get power until late Tuesday. Us? We had trees down, but our power remained. But it made for newsroom craziness the last few days.
Sounds like a nice little community-forming moment, though.
Yeah, we live in Ohio too and the winds that blew through here were incredible. Power lines down….power out at GASP! the mall…school off and on all week long. Sheesh! We didn’t even get any rain!
Stooopid Ike!
dawn
p.s. glad you got to watch the game!
That stinks. Sounds like you befriended the right guy though!
Ah, we got hit, too. And were without power for about a day. Got our power back on late Monday. There are still some people a couple blocks from me still without power. My son was so excited to be able to go back to school today. Unfortunately his school sign got blown down.
Would never thought I would see Hurricane winds in Ohio!
So you move from the natural disaster epicenter of the Earth to sedate Ohio and you get pounded by Ike? So. Very. Wrong.
Actually, the worst storm I’ve ever been in was in Chagrin Falls, Ohio. Uprooted trees everywhere and lightning like I’ve never seen before or since. Gad.
Also, while dining with a client in Cleveland, I saw this gigantic alien dragonfly hovering outside the 45th floor window. No joke, this thing had at least a foot-long wingspread.
And you thought L.A. was weird!
